Compulsion
Stewart MacFarlane's small paintings
are the focus of this catalogue and survey exhibition
at Carnegie Gallery in Hobart. The small paintings are
direct observations, foundations for the major works,
while still standing alone as complete in themselves.
Seeing a large group of these works together, painted
over more than three decades, displays a consistent
vision and working discipline as well as the range of
subject matter favoured by the artist.
The monograph includes an informative
essay by Dr Veronique Helmridge-Marsillian entitled
The Small Painting: How and What.
